“Why Him?” is a comedy directed by John Hamburg and had a budget of $38 million. The film was released in the United States on December 23, 2016.

Ned Fleming (Bryan Cranston), an overprotective dad, travels to California to visit his daughter Stephanie (Zoey Deutch) for the holidays. Ned meets Stephanie’s billionaire-boyfriend, Laird (James Franco). Ned doesn’t approve of Laird’s lack of filter and vulgar personality, but things spin out of control once he learns that Laird wants to ask for Stephanie’s hand in marriage.

The highlight of the film was definitely James Franco. Though his character’s personality was over the top, he managed to feel convincing. Bryan Cranston’s character’s humor was a nice surprise considering he is well known for his major role in the drama series “Breaking Bad.” Surprisingly every member of the cast had a convincing performance.

There was nothing that I disliked about the movie besides a minor nitpick regarding the film’s pacing. There were very minor parts of the movie that dragged a little and didn’t feel relevant to the overall plot.

The major theme at work in this movie is to “never judge a book by its cover.” I feel that these are constant themes throughout the story.

The average movie-goer, especially teens would enjoy this movie due to its raunchy humor. I would recommend this movie to those who enjoy the “Neighbors” films. As a side note, this film’s plot appears to share parallels to the original “Meet the Parents” film.

In my opinion “Why Him?” is a very good movie, so I give it a 4 out of 5.
