We celebrate first black princess

Disney Productions introduces its first Black princess, Princess Tiana, in the movie “The Princess and the Frog,” which is set in old time New Orleans. It features the voices of Oprah Winfrey, Terrence Howard and Jennifer Lewis.

This movie is great for all young Black girls in America. Being a Black girl who grew up watching Disney movies with none of them who look like me, I know it affects a girl’s childhood.

Young Black girls don’t have anybody a part of our culture who they can look up to. There’s nobody who looks like us doing courageous things, overcoming obstacles, being considered beautiful and being a princess.

When you’re a kid, you look up to the characters in these shows and movies that you watch, and being a little girl, you look up to Cinderella, Belle and Ariel because you watch the movies and you see all the great things that happen to them.

We, the Black girls, never had anybody that we can say, “If she can do it, then so can I.” In the media, there are so many negative depictions of African American girls, and if that’s all that young Black girls see, that’s all that they’re going to believe they can achieve.

In the latest issue of Essence magazine, actress Anika Noni Rose, voice of Princess Tiana in the film, is on the cover.

The article features other young Black actresses and their mothers. In it, they talk about what this film means to them and the effect that it is going to have.

“The Princess and the Frog” is going to let the new generation of young Black girls know that they are princesses too. Its also going to open the eyes of White America on African American girls, let them know that we are more than the stereotypes that they see on their television screens.
