Freshmen speak out on lack of (green) veggies

Media Academy freshmen are working on projects involving food and nutrition in several of their classes.

One of their activities included reading a New York Times article entitled “Told to Eat its Vegetables, America Orders Fries” and comparing it to an article that ran in the school newspaper.

The Sept. 24 New York Times article was based on a nationwide study of fruit and vegetable consumption.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention discovered that only 26 percent of the nation’s adults eat vegetables three or more times a day. The article states that french fries do not count as a vegetable.

However, the Green & Gold reported last year that the Fremont Federation cafeteria is counting french fries as vegetables, and therefore is following federal nutrition rules in serving many students three or more portions of the “vegetable” at lunch. A portion is 10 fries.
