Fremont wins debate title at SFSU

The Fremont debate team took first place for small teams at the Fall Championships of the Bay Area Urban Debate League in December at San Francisco State University.

Sophomore Damonte Wheat won first place in the rookie division after pairing up with a student from Emery High which he had never met before. That student took first place as an individual speaker and Wheat took second place.

“I was excited,” said Wheat. “I practiced a lot. I don’t get tired. I feel like I played a big role in the championship.”

Wheat said his goal for the next tournament is to win a trophy by going undefeated.

Other debaters winning rounds for Fremont at the Dec. 6 tournament included sophomores Marlecia Moss and Oscar Kuc-Reyes in the rookie division and sophomores Kevin Thompson and Jose Pacheco, and freshmen Daniela Reynosa-Guerra and Damarea Brown in the novice division.

Fremont was commended by league organizer Toni Nielson for being a team with all new debaters and coaches, but still winning the small teams championship.

The team is coached by teachers Maya Shweiky and Lisa Shafer and Mills College student Victoria Gurrola. To join the debate team, see Shafer in room 1102 or Shweiky in room 1114.
