Lady Tigers Finish Season Strong

The Lady Tigers volleyball team finished their season on a good note on Nov. 9 with a victory over the Oakland High Wildcats. This victory came after the Lady Tigers struggled through most of the season posting a 2-6 record for this year.

The final game of the season was also the Lady Tiger’s senior day. As part of the event the team honored its four seniors Kelly and Shelly Irving, Sabina Torres, and Erika Lopez for their participating in volleyball during the 2010 season. They were given gifts prior to the game and the celebration really seemed to boost the Lady Tiger’s moral as they went on to beat Oakland high three sets to one.

The Lady Tigers head coach Darlene Miller, however expressed some bright spots for the team over the year. Such as there two home victories one over Castlemont and the other over Oakland High. Another advantage is for next year is the players who practiced hard according to Miller a few more than others.

“We have three girls you really see an improvement in –Tina Tieng, Tierra Penny and Florentina Moreno,” Miller said.

Miller commented on the number of players she had trying out this year compared to last, saying “we had an equal turnout in people trying out this year, around 30.”

This is not as high as Miller would hope but hopefully there will be an increase next year with incoming freshmen and returning players. One good note for the Lady Tigers is that two of their improving players should be returning to the Lady Tigers next year.

When talking to players of the team they stated they were proud of themselves even though the season did not go as planned. However the Lady Tigers are confident they will make more noise in the O.A.L next year.
