The mens basketball team defeated a very strong Albany High team in a closely contested battle at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Basketball Tournament on Jan. 20.

The Tigers defeated the 17-2 Albany squad by a score of 53-51 at Merritt College.

Fremont seniors Donell Wheat and Tyronne Gaines led all scorers with 20 and 14 points respectively.

“It was a really fun game,” said senior guard Kaelin Mixon. “It was all fun and games out there and we got the job done. That’s two in a row.”

The victory over Albany came three days after the Tigers beat the Skyline High Titans 53-55 with a game tying layup by Gaines and a game winning tip in by junior forward Edward McGowan.

“It was the best night of my life,” said McGowan. “What’s better than making a game winner in front of the other team’s crowd?”

Oakland High is next for the Tigers, who will try to make it three overall victories in a row and two league wins in row.
